The Browning BPS Special Steel Field Model Pump 20 Gauge was tested as a used gun in the April 2008 issue of Gun Tests magazine. Counter Price at Dury’s Gun Shop in San Antonio: $370.
Of the gun, the Gun Tests staff said, “Slim and trim, with enough weight to help the shotgun glide through targets, the 22-inch barrel Browning was an instant hit with our group. We felt comfortable with the straight grip on the English-style stock, and the finger grooves in the forearm proved to be a natural fit.”
Was that a good price for the gun? A price check on GunBroker.com suggests it was.
On Sept. 2, GunBroker.com had 50 BPSs listed, most of which were 12 gauges. Of the 20s, the high price of $425 was for a used gun with a 28” barrel, factory chokes and case. The text for Auction # # 109073538 said the gun “…This is a like-new Browning BPS 20-gauge shotgun. It has a few light handling marks on the wood, bluing is excellent. 95-98% condition.” On Wednesday, the no-reserve auction had a starting bid of $425 and had 2 days to run.
A similar price, $330, was listed for a gun in Auction #108815898. The description: “Fresh to market from an estate collection… being sold with no reserve. Very nice mint Browning BPS Upland 20 ga with Browning case… 22 inch vent rib barrel… awesome wood… mint condition would rate 99.99% or better… looks to have been fired very little if any.”
