(GunReports.com) — The National Rifle Association announced the selection of Cecil County Maryland Sheriff’s Deputy Michael S. Zack as the group’s 2011 Law Enforcement Officer of the Year.
Deputy First Class Zack was selected for this prestigious award based upon his selfless act of valor on January 6, 2011. On that day, Zack was returning from the gym when word of a high-speed pursuit came over the police radio.
Joining the chase, Deputy Zack soon provided immediate support and took charge of communications. When they arrived at the suspect’s residence, Zack and the other Deputy moved independently towards the house. Hearing his partner commanding the suspect to drop his firearm, Deputy Zack ran to the location where he witnessed the suspect armed with a sawed off shotgun. Then the gunman took aim.
Off duty, dressed only in gym clothes and without his ballistic vest, Deputy Zack immediately engaged with multiple shots, dropping the gunman to the floor and ending the confrontation.
“Deputy Michael S. Zack exemplifies the professionalism of our nation’s best law enforcement officers who view their role as a sacred trust,” said NRA President David Keene. “His fellow Deputy may well be alive today because of Zack’s heroism and for that he must be grateful. All of us should be just as grateful that there are men and women in this country like Michael Zack who are willing to selflessly put themselves in harm’s way to enforce our society’s laws and provide the security essential to a free society.
“Law enforcement officers like Deputy Zack deserve our support, respect, gratitude and recognition for what they do every day for those they have sworn to protect. I can think of no one more deserving of recognition as the NRA Law Enforcement Officer of the Year than Deputy Zack.”
